abstract = "The areas irrigated by center pivots in 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000,
2005, 2010 and 2015 in the Region of MATOPIBA (Brazil) were
digitalized through visual identification based on a mosaic formed
by images of the satellite Landsat 4, 5, 7, and 8, displayed using
the software Google Earth. There was a significant expansion of
the area irrigated by center pivots in this period, that changed
from 13 to 1,548 pivots between 1985 and 2015, when the irrigated
area increased from 1,418 ha to 160,172 ha. More than half of the
center pivots occurred in Microregion of Barreiras and Santa Maria
da Vitoria, in the western part of the State of Bahia, in the
Middle S{\~a}o Francisco River Basin. The municipalities with the
highest density and relative area occupied by center pivots were:
Barreiras / BA, Luis Eduardo Magalh{\~a}es / BA, S{\~a}o
F{\'e}lix do Coribe / BA and S{\~a}o Desid{\'e}rio / BA. They
were also the municipalities with the highest increase in area
irrigated by center pivots considering the analyzed period. In the
States of Tocantins, Piau{\'{\i}} and Maranh{\~a}o, the
municipalities with the highest relative area occupied by center
pivots were respectively Pedro Afonso / TO, Guadalupe / PI and
Riach{\~a}o / MA. The region is considered of great interest to
expansion of the agricultural frontier of Brazil. Environmental
conservation should be considered for the future expansion of the
irrigated area in the Region.",
